Truly Taming The Shrew

When Jenni Konner and Lena Dunham asked me to photograph the all-female cast of the The Public Theater's "Taming of the Shrew" for Lenny Letter, I couldn't have grabbed my cameras fast enough.

“While the all-female Ghostbusters cast caused some people to throw temper tantrums earlier this summer, an all-female performance of Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” was happening in Central Park as part of the Public Theater’s free Shakespeare in the Park shows — and I had the opportunity to hang out with some of the cast. Backstage, there was a familiar energy, the same energy I felt while attending my all-girl high school. I talked to the actors while they were getting ready, and it was like spending a few hours with the family of your best friend — feeling immediately welcome and as if you never want to leave. I could go on and on, but instead we have these beautiful photographs by Melanie Dunea that perfectly capture the magic backstage and a few quotes from the women I spoke to about their experiences doing the play. I hope you enjoy.”
